Don't they have a "favorite movie" icon for this?</statingtheobvious>

That being said, Space Jam. I was thinking sequel from the moment I saw it... its too bad, really. There was so much left to be said.

i have a LOT of 'favourite movies' but if i had to pick a particular 'most-favored favorite' it would be American Beauty. and i don't watch it much anymore.

the reasoning behind it? read about the buddhist quest for nirvana. American Beauty is about Lester Burnham's spiritual enlightenment. at the end, when mena suvari's character asks, "how are you," and he replies, "i'm great," you can SEE (and this is why kevin spacey is so underrated) his moment of self-revelation: he reaches nirvana. OF COURSE HIS LIFE MUST IMMEDIATELY END; HE CAN NO LONGER GROW ON THIS PLANE OF EXISTENCE.

it was very zen and very, very moving to me.

I find it hilarious that I get blasted for being unoriginal and unfunny on this site. Dear god people. Pot. Kettle. Black. "Fuck off" says the kettle back to the pot.

Thumbs up to morelos for understanding the undercurrents of American Beauty.

Some personal favorites of mine: Harold and Maude, Donnie Darko, Clockwork Orange, and the Ninja Turtles trilogy.

bty - word up. i always look for nuances. i was lucky in that i got over the "looking for good camera direction and blah blah blah" phase. i still get hung up on soundtracks, though. an epic film must have an appropriate soundtrack.

case in point: the sucky music in 'troy' made it that much worse. the tremendous music in 'gladiator' made it that much better.

the difference? well, first off, no HEEECTTOOORRRRRRR HEEECTTTOORRRR scene, but second, james horner should not be scoring for movies anymore. he got it right with braveheart and with titanic, but that's all. everything else he does has had a whopping three moves: "wanna-be hectic," "wanna-be intimate," and "wanna-be majestic." he fails at all three and his instrumentation is always predictable. when i hear the soundtrack the whole time i'm watching the movie, it means there is no synergy and i'm not going to enjoy the movie.

and did i mention that in 'troy' not a single of the 'hectic' noises matched up with the action? it was like half a second de-synched and bored me to tears quickly.

on the other hand, hans zimmer has produced some amazing things, including 'the rock,' and 'gladiator,' and more importantly, klaus badeldt (his former understudy) who gave us 'pirates of the caribbean: the curse of the black pearl.'

back to good movies: "payback" was underrated. i'm not a huge fan of gibson's acting, but he plays a great funny jerk with a gun. that's the kind of guy i'd like to be if i knew i could get away with it. a funny jerk with a gun. anyway, payback has many, MANY holes opened in the plot and EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM is closed by the end of the film. very well done.

and the camera direction at the scene where he's shot (car drives down off the screen) was fabulous (even though i know i didn't want to discuss that).

Cradle 2 the Grave is a good movie, Jet Li and DMX work well together, although DMX is now working the best in jail.

I was reminded of Donnie Darko today. That, along with Waking Life, has to be one of my top three favorite movies.

I went to www.donniedarko.com and it cleared a lot of stuff up, but opened even more questions... I'm not sure whether I liked the movie more before or after I saw that site.

Both ways, your mind is blown... and the same with Waking Life. These two movies got me thinking in directions I'd never visited before.

Roger Dodger is an amazing movie. so much shit going on in there. some of the best dialogue i've ever heard, funny as hell, and the end is one of the most uplifting moments i can think of in a film. Donnie Darko is great. the dvd has a bunch of cut scenes that are supposed to answer shit from the regular movie, but really it just makes things more confusing. but who cares? that movie was all about the atmosphere. and that pimp ass soundtrack.

also, i have a weird fascination with that movie "The Last Boy Scout" with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans. It's not a great movie, but Bruce Willis is frickin hilarious in it. it's like he's doing this really subtle send-up of action movie heroes. really funny shit.

yeah, ok, so you've sacrificed coherence to increase cohesion? The subject still seems fairly coherent to me. What's your favorite movie/movies? The first thread is actually completely contained before the second one, so any lack of coherence is from the posts in the second thread, and not due to the merge.
