PS3; I've played my PS2 way more than my Xbox, and I don't feel inclined to paying an extra fee just to be able to play online.
Halo 3 will suck just like Halo 2, so who cares. I haven't been interested in Halo since the first one came out, and who plays FPS games on a console anyway? http://forums.wtf.com/images/smilies/gay.gif

I'm gonna have to wait for a price drop as well. fuck microsoft in the anus, as they need no more money to generate a future crappy-designed xbox 1080 (that would be a cool name).

Yeah.. The new controller looks like a complete mistake. They should have stuck with the GC layout it worked well.

wavebird was my favorite controller, and 'eternal darkness' probably my favorite game from that gen.. shame there weren't more reasons to love the GC..

I'll get a 360 not long after it comes out and then if there are no good games for it by the time the PS3 comes out, I will sell it to pay towards Sony's machine. If there are good games though I will have to wait for the prices to come down.

I never owned any consoles, well I lied. My parents bought me a super nintendo when they came out. Never used it, never played it.
I guess I am not into this type of things. I don't like TV, so that could be a huge part of it.

I'ma havce to go with the PS3. I've been a big fan of the Playstations since I first played Crash Bandicoot back in '95. And although I have an Xbox, I don't plan on getting the 360 anytime soon. The only think Microsoft has going for it's next console, save for a few hit games, is it's better graphics.

From the standpoint of someone who knows *A LOT* about video game history, the PS3 will flounder badly in the market, and possibly even on the level of the Sega Saturn.
The PS3 offers no real advantage to developers - it has power comparable to the Xbox 360. But what about Blu-Ray?
I can tell you one thing - I'm a game designer, and I want to make my games for the platform with the largest install base, easiest use of programming, and cheapest media.
XBox 360 does all of that and more.
The PS3? Not even close. A $600 machine is pricey - Times may have changed, but people are balking at the $600 price tag of the PS3 as much as they were balking at the $400 price tag of the Saturn.
The Blu-Ray disc drive is self defeating due to this. Game developers get 40GB storage, but with a $600 console and $60-70 games the customer will be very frugal in picking out software, and thus will "give it a second thought" and pass up your game.
"But Jim, doesn't that mean that only the best games will be on PS3?"
Well, no...Not at all. There will be less games for PS3 due to this fact. Ill-advised customers will get the "game they care more about," say for example, FF7, instead of buying FF7 and Research and Development Episode I, a game I have finished designing, and can safely say will never see a release on any console. PC exclusive.
If the publisher doesn't make money, the developers won't make money. If the publishers don't make money off a console, they won't fund any developer expeditions into development kits and other equipment, because they have no distribution and no contract.
A console's success is dependent on the consumer, developer, and publisher. I owned the Dreamcast from day 1 and have had trouble getting into console gaming since, because there was so much innovation and artistry on that thing. The newer console titles lack this, big thumbs up to EA for that shit.
Had the PS2 not been overhyped, it would have failed because the developers would have skipped it and used the Dreamcast, which was easier, had equal power, and a faster graphics subsystem minus polygon counts.
PS3 isn't as insanely hard to code for as PS2 or Saturn, but it's harder than the other two and therefore will be another turn off for devs.
This in mind, I'll be getting an XBox 360 but not before I get a new ATi Radeon X800XL video card for my computer. My Radeon 9700 Pro is starting to show it's age.
And if you get burned on the PS3, don't come crying to me, I warned you. It's already looking much like the Saturn did before it's launch. Lots of hype, positive press, but as soon as the devs start fucking with it and hate it, and are unable to turn a profit, they'll bail.
Why spend $600 when you can get the same capabilites and more for $400, as well as the same games at lower prices?

I will still go for the PS3, mainly for the new Gran Turismo, and probably buy a 360, if i can get hold of enough money, but I do think that Sony are going to have a major fight on thier hands when the machines are released in Europe and North America. The latest servey done in Japan is showing that 70% would prefer the PS3. This may not mean anything though.
A mention must go to Nintendo though as they will have some impact on the next gen, but it won't be enough to see them through this time if they only rely on thier existing fan base and fail to market the Revolution as well as Sony and Microsoft do with their consoles. If any proof were needed then look at the way they dealt with the Gamecube.

the only people quoting this $600 ps3 price is xbox fanboys and sony reverse fetishists (such as yourself)..
it is well documented that the ps3 will cost $399..
$600? that's more than it costs to make and you of all people should know tht's not how consoles are marketed, they lose money for the first year or so..
descent, i do enjoy reading one or two of your caffeine fueled diatribes, when they are relevant, but the sony bashing.. it just reeks of juvenility.. sony is a player in the next-gen, anything else you may believe is purely speculation at this point.

Ahhh, I wasn't aware of the $400USD price tag. It would be safe to suffice the machine will stand a chance now.
My bad.

Yeah, Japan's personal taste is never on par with the rest of the world. They preferred the Sega Saturn until Final Fantasy 7 came out.
Wheras the PS-X eclipsed Saturn after FF7, it was still viable for 2D games.
And how many Americans or Europeans bought the Saturn?
Uh...lemme think...no one. In NA only two million were sold, and in Europe 3 million.
As for hardware, Japan is formerly Nintendo biased, now Sony biased. Europe has been Sega biased since the 80's, then went Nintendo/Sony/Sega Megadrive (EUR/JAP Genesis name) during the Saturn debacle, went Sega again during the Dreamcast, but post-Dreamcast they have been pretty neutral. Cool little fact about Europe, nobody bought the NES there and bought the Sega Master System instead. America has gone from Atari to Nintendo to Sega to Sony and Nintendo to Sega to Microsoft and Sony.
The American market is fickle as fuck and unlike Europe or Japan is more slanted towards advertising than actual hardware/game quality.
Europe is slanted towards the "better deal," which is why in the 80's everyone owned a Sega Master System, Sega sold it for less than the NES and since it had much prettier graphics and better audio capabilites, Eurpoeans found it to be the better console. Sega controlled 92% of the market until the Saturn there, the SNES didn't catch on either due to it's high price tag.
Japan is hard to predict. Japanese consumers spend MUCH more than American or European consumers because "they get what they need" and "don't skimp." Since the Sega Saturn had Virtua Fighter at launch there, Japanese consumers spent $360 for a console and an extra $50 for a game. They all sold out within two days and the Virtua Fighter CD-ROM sold at nearly a 1:1 ratio with the system itself.
But when Final Fantasy 7 came out, many Japanese players "just had to have it" and happily plunked down $250 for a PlayStation and a game.
But Nintendo 64 was the most powerful system and didn't sell until more games were released...It initially had a small, expensive library here as well.
And the Dreamcast sold like hotcakes for three weeks...Until the PS2's "specs" (Don't get me started, it's inferior to the Dreamcast in all respects but poly counts) were released.
OMGLOL A SUPARCOMPUTAR WITH NO GAMEZ AND IT PLAYS DVD'S LOLZ.
Japan is the fucking hardest market in the world. It's as bipolar as an emo kid with a hangover.
And I think with that new controller, Nintendo will have to court FPS develoeprs or die trying.
Their reputation is as bad now in North America as Sega's was in the final days of the Saturn - The Kamikaze console.
And I'm seeing a gimmer of hope in the Revolution, but not a total throwback to "how we were," a la Dreamcast.
Then again, the Revolution is exactly what Dreamcast was, "Try every new thing the market could want and make it cheap."
If you have owned a Dreamcast from Day 1 even thinking of the Revoltuion makes you nostalgic.
Oh God, the innovative third paty titles on the Dreamcast...The same thing could happen again with the Revolution.
Dreamcast was the perfect console software and hardware wise, and developer wise had some of the best backing ever. You could take a risk and not have to risk losing money on a new style title because the Dreamcast licensing and development was so cheap, it was insane.
If Nintendo adopt's Sega's business method for the Revolution I WILL buy one at launch.
Let's face it, both systems are heavily emphasizing online play as a necessity, have innovative controllers, and insanely powerful cheap hardware.
Both are being promoted as "the next new thing in gaming," and I think Nintendo has a great shot at this.

well when you look at the systems, you gotta ask yourself, what do you want outta a game system? if you're looking for graphics, then it's pretty much a tie, if you want halo, 360. if you want jak and daxter, ps3. if you have a bunch of xbox games, and wanna dish out the extra $100 for the available hard drive (required for backwards compatibility), 360.
the 360 is going to have more add-ons than the ps3 will, i believe. plus, if you buy the $400 bundle, you'll get the console, hard drive, wireless controller, 1 year of silver membership to live, a remote and maybe a game. i've heard that gamestop is selling a $4000 bundle that includes the console, 4 controllers, memory units, hard drive (20 GB), all the launch games, and a 42' dell flatscreen TV. though this is still a rumor, it could happen.
ps3 looked really tight at E3, with its stunning graphics and games. however, we're still gonna have to wait for that to come out, as the 360 is expected to launch later this year.
nintendo, on the other hand, is releasing the revolution (when? dunno, probably after they finally finish zelda: twilight princess). there will be an available online service that you can download most of, if not all, of the previously released nintendo games (from the original NES to the gamecube, you get it all).
oh, and by the way, if you're getting a ps3 just because it has final fantasy, think again. the series is coming to xbox as well.

You'll never see a full-powered Discman sized console. Keep in mind the Genesis technology was 10 years old by 1995 (Yes, it was a fucking System 16 arcade board with a slower CPU, fucktards!), and Sega CD was maturing and aging quite badly.

That's as close as we've come...Jesus Christ, I WANT ONE !!!!
The Sega CD-X was a Genesis/Sega CD/Portable CD player all in one unit that could play CD's while running off batteries...
Oh God, all I need is a CD-X and a Saturn and I will have completed my North American Sega Console collection :). That thing is WELL WORTH $120 in my opinion. Come on! It's cool as balls!
It may have been 75% bigger than a comparable Discman back in the day, but it's got a fucking Sega CD in there!
