Why do people let themselves get brainwashed into believing in god, I mean how can anybody seriously think that religion makes any sense. The only religion that has ever made sense to me is Bhuddism (don't assume I am a bhuddist because I am not I am an athiest), but although technically that's not a religion. How can anyone possibly believe in a supernatural being, it's no difference from magic, do you believe in magic? I mean seriously, these religious bastards just brainwash people at birth by baptising them or some other ritual, and then they keep them in check every sunday or friday, depending upon the religion. It's horrible, science explains everything that the religions try to explain. All religion does is cause violence throughout the world; people are killed all over the world in the name of religion, and have been throughout all of history.

as i get older, i find it harder and harder to appreciate and accept religion, of any kind, in the world. Hearing about Shiites and Sunni's fighting over religion, when they both are Muslim, just astounds me. Humans did not need the help of god to evolve, they evolved through a serious of mutations over millions of years. It is called survival of the fittest, as the weaker die out the stronger live on and mate and carry on their superior genes, and as the weakest kept on dieing out, eventually the superior species of earth, the humans, came to be. We are machines, and I do what I do because I have already realized this. So what if life is meaningless? You can still have fun, just while your doing it try not to think to hard. It doesn't matter if I can have fun or not knowing my life is meaningless (although I do in fact, enjoy my life and have fun almost every day) however, the fact that everything may seem like part of a machine and pain no longer hurts doesn't make life any more meaningfull. Many people argue that "Well then who made the matter that became the earth and made the big bang." Well then if god made all that who made god huh? To which they would usually reply "God was always there." This sort of arguement is the most common when it comes to religion. But then the opposition just starts to get stupid and they call me a crazy lier because they can't think of anything else to say when I would reply "Why can't matter have always been there?" As the the law of science that states "Matter can neither be created nor destroyed." Would point us towards. Although I may have ran a bit off topic, I think it was all relevent, because it is this that inspires most religions, the whole "What created the earth?" scenerio.

Anyone who believes in religion believes in magic, although they will probably call it "gods power" or something of that sort, they would never admit that it is the same as magic; the "god(s)" still perform scientifically impossible tasks, and the religious books that they say are "proof", are no different from a common fiction story.
And religion does more harm then good, it does not keep people in line. The worst crimes in history have been commited in the name of religion, people blow themselves up all the time because they think its the right thing to do, or a priest promised them sixty virgins in the afterlife or some similar type of bullshit. Abortion clinics get blown up, theres still fighting in Ireland, and the middle east is the worst. The Hebrews were picked out of the crowd (although not really because of their religion, but if there was no religion to classify them by it would have been impossible to do what was done on such a large scale).
Furthermore, telling people they can change their fate through prayer is not a good thing either. It gives people a false sense of hope, and it often makes people irrational. It makes people willing to sacrifice their lives because they believe that in their "afterlife" they will be rewarded.

in no way am i religious. i don't believe in organized religion, and i believe religion was used as a form of government. Also if you were to study greek mythology and the bible you would notice many of the stories are based on the same principles and since i find greek mythology to be bullshit i think the bible is bullshit as well. it's very hard to acknowledge if religion is crappy or not, because there are so many variables between each religion. sure, the whole "god" thing seems like a big pile of steaming bullcookies, but religions also teach morals that can increase someones behavior. you see, if someone believes in a "supreme being", they feel secure, and so if rules are set (the bible etc) then they believe following those moral rules will keep their security. although, I think these morals are becoming more negative, since many people of the same religion misinterprete them.

I think most religions suckass though, mainly because the people these days following these religions overexaggerate and force them in your face.

At birth there will be some sort of ritual, like a baptism, and then they will keep you brainwashed every sunday. Then the religious leader in your area will decide what you have to do in order to be "saved" and he has you brainwashed from there. Don't go looking for purpose. Your purpose, as a biological entity, is to eat, excrete, reproduce (well, maybe not you), and die. Since you have thumbs and a forebrain (big assumption for some people), you have the capability to transcend mere existence and experience that little thing we call life. That is, if your dumb ass doesn't forget to breathe in the process.

I'm not religious, in any way shape or form, but I can understand why there is religion, often people need something to believe in, they need to believe that there is some purpose to life... and that there isn't just "nothing" after death, and that's perfectly fine, people can follow whatever religion they want, so long as they don't expect me to agree with all thier beliefs. people should all be raised without a religion and than should be allowed to choose what they believe for themselves (that's what happened to me.. well kinda... If you all can remember what a book looks like (I know, it's been a long time for me too!) there's a few really good ones that I've just read that take a really interesting look at religion itself, and also the interaction of religion and science.

1. Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
2. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (sequel to book #1)
3. Life of Pi by Yann Martel

The books, much like the Bible, are fictional, but the first two are based a lot in fact. The author, Brown, spent years researching them. Really good reading, highly suspenseful, well written.

The third is also fictional, but it takes a really unique point of view about religion - Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. Also a really good thriller, I found it hard to put down.

So if you have the time and want some good reads that stimulate your thinking about religion, pick 'em up. I don't consider myself religious, I don't go to church, and my Fiancee and I are getting married by a judge, but I still found them really interesting.

Most of the religions over laps each other and have diffrent names for the same god. Some are strict others are not... Why don't you before you speak about religion, go out and study up on diffrent types of relidion and better educate yourself so that you can speak against it and not sound like a fool.

The only religion that has ever made sense to me is Bhuddism (don't assume I am a bhuddist because I am not I am an athiest), but although technically that's not a religion.
