View Full Version : The Ugliest Computer Setup Ever

After moving into the new house, there lay a problem. The antenna was missing and thus no TV. My Anime was on my 933 compy, and therefore I had to set it up.

Zee the zombie-like head on the screen? That's my 933 active. Managed to watch 5 episodes of Samurai Depper Kyo with it. Comfy stuff. BUT!
http://www.geocities.com/psowstats/WTF/02.txt
Desk. Must assemble!
http://www.geocities.com/psowstats/WTF/03.txt
Bed! Must put together!
http://www.geocities.com/psowstats/WTF/04.txt
Along with more shit to clean up elsewhere in the house...
Now, my fabulous idea was to put my desk this way:
http://www.geocities.com/psowstats/WTF/05.txt
My mom absolutely wanted it this way though:
http://www.geocities.com/psowstats/WTF/06.txt
She had even gone so far as to arrange the lighting and the power plugs to fit it this way, despite my many warnings that I was gonna put the desk my way. She claimed it was impossible, and yet I went away with my plan. I told her I appreciated the help, but I had a design in my head, and I would put it to reality come hell or high water!

And thus, I began moving shit around...

Parenthesis. The old house had a great view of Montreal's skyline since we were on a hill. Now all we see is this. Meh:

Two white Dell compies next to each other in the most unfriendly way, with my portable, my monitors, my printer, my old phone and my speakers somewhere along all that.
But wait! What is this cord that goes outta my room?

And along with an Ethernet cable setup we had done before the builders had stuck gyproc all over the place.
And this is how I realized the ugliest computer setup ever. Mom still can't believe it. It really is fucking ugly.

That's a freakin' ton of wiring! We just plug in to the phone lines... 56k. Being behind the times is fun
And yes, my 56k did take about a minute and a half to load this page. Its cool like that.
Errm, and what's the advantage of two computers/monitors? I just have one...

So basically, if you move your mouse off of one screen, it goes on to the other?
That's cool. I've got a fairly large monitor, but I can't find the tape measure right now. I'm running 1152 by 864 resolution, yours (and Shurikane's, if he has the same kinda thing going on) must be huge.
Also, you should move your phone away from your speaker... it'll sound like somebody lifted a blanket off of it

Actually, that's pretty damn cool. I'm not sure if it would work out for me (I probably would neglect one screen or the other for long periods of time), though.
Shurikane, with that much cable, you've got to have horrible connection speeds... or so I'd think.
mariusthegreat
08-22-2004, 01:37 AM
yeah..it is pretty damn cool...:] if you have an extra pci card..you can dump it in there..it should work...i know win2k and above handle it...

Hmm. My (limited) knowledge of computers is almost all software-oriented, and I don't even have any idea what a pci card is
Either way, my family would probably go ballistic. "WTF SOS LOLL???!!!!!!! Y is tehre a SECOND minotaur? Wut does it do?>?. Srry im noob"
They actually talk like that. Plus, I don't have a second monitor to begin with.

that's not bad, guys. i like both your setups. shurikane, can i recommend some zip-ties (cable ties) to clean up those loose wires?
you guys have all already seen my credenza, so i won't re-post it. here is a bit of how my server rack attaches to the rest of the house, though.

hard to even see the bit that runs along the floor because it's bound into a tight round bit and runs perfectly straight along the floor.
now here's my pc setup:
http://www.fruzzetti.org:8080/pics/2004-aug/wires/setup1.jpg
http://www.fruzzetti.org:8080/pics/2004-aug/wires/setup2.jpg
note the way those wires underneath are ziptied makes it so i can slide the box from where it is all the way to the rightmost part of under the table, or entirely out from under the table. if i unplug stuff, it's almost like a docking station because the wire bundle will keep its shape for when i plug it all back in, and the plastic chest of drawers is on casters so i can slide it out. it all worked out to be a lot better than i expected it to be.
you can see the docking station for my laptop there in both pics, but i'll take a closer-up shot of it here:
http://www.fruzzetti.org:8080/pics/2004-aug/wires/lappy.jpg
anyway, that's my setup.

btw, all the wiring between rooms in this house happened UNDER the house. pulling cable under a house sucks, but it was the only option, considering the house is as old as eniac.

http://goa.fragism.com/DCP_0106.JPG
http://goa.fragism.com/DCP_0107.JPG
http://goa.fragism.com/DCP_0108.JPG
The black Dell computer up top is my Teamspeak server...The blue computer with the window and lights is my main box...the beige computer is the shitbox I built out of some spare parts last week...It has a Pentium-133 (OCed to 166) in it...
The two Altec Lansing speakers/subwoofer I use for the TS server...my main box's audio is the headset on top of my VCR, and a set of Paradigm speakers wired through a Pioneer reciever...Those provide me with flawless uncolored audio.
The shitbox remains unhooked because I need a serial mouse for it...that and the fact that my KVM switch only supports two computers.
The TS server and my main box are connected to an 802.11B wireless network, via two Belkin USB wireless adapters (and no, they don't lag).
My laptop is not in the picture, but it is on my desk. It needs a new keyboard so it is really out of view.
On my TV cart is a Genesis, Dreamcast, SNES, Sega Nomad, Namco 4-in-1 TV games, Atari 10-in-1 TV games, a Toshiba DVD player, a Panasonic VCR, a Playstaion 1, two computer joysticks, a DirecTV reciever, and a cheap Chinese Apex 20" TV that does the job quite well.
Shurikane, I feel sorry for you...it must really suck having such a crappy setup for your PC's. Good luck in getting it fixed.

That's what the compy had originally come up with. It was all I had to work with originally, so I was forced to cope with that. Later on, father got pissed, threw away my old HD and put a new one back in for reasons I don't need to explain. Computer was put offline from the net as well, leaving me with an impossible-to-corrupt Windows ME. :P Never bothered to install something else since offline, it was just stable and could usually last a week before freezing.
By my standards, a week is a fucking miracle for anything below Win2000.
I soon plan to format that 933 to put Win2000 on it, but first I need to go buy a KVM switch to clean up my desk, and also I need to figure out where I'm up to with new computer stuff. If I don't get a new one right away, the reformat can wait...
