View Full Version : Philosophy?

Alright, lately I've been mulling over a few topics that seem a little too heavy for "Chit-Chat", but don't really seem to belong in "The Issues". I propose a philosophy forum, where users can post their deep thoughts/questions.

If this is a horrible idea, feel free to let me know

what if I fell off the bandwagon, or I agree, but I tried to jump on the bandwagon but was too slow and got ran over? Then would I be disagreeing?

or more:
If a tree falls in the woods, and your wife doesnt hear it, are you still wrong?

If a tree falls in the woods and your wife doesn't hear it, then you tell her to; "geht off her lazy housewife ass and go chop the firewood", "Don't make me hafta hitchya, you know I don't like when ya make me hafta hitchya."

Hooray! I voted yes (fairly obviously). If my vote doesn't count, then feel free to disregard it...

As for putting it in the writer's block, I don't think that's a good idea (it's more to discuss literature, rather than discuss matters of distant importance, in my opinion). But if Jason/BRiT/Whoever else makes the decisions thinks that's better, or not at all, then that's fine as well.

Insanity is in the eyes of the beholder; as is what the "norm" can be connotatively defined as. This is evident in many of our society's role models or icons. For example, some perceive Marilyn Manson as a grotesque human being while others view him as a prophet. In order to argue about such a topic like the one found in Fight Club, you can't define values of mindset and must come up with your own thoughts but not inflict them upon other people's ideas.

In a nutshell, we're all 'crazy' according to the next guy in line.

part of the writers block is so you can discuss ideas and issues like this. Also so is chit chat.

So you pick. Issue is for news/political debate.

That is really rather degrading to the nature of philosophical discussions.....To have to contend for space with "Whats your favorite sex position" or "Which snack food gives you a chubby". I think its a fantastic idea, It would cut down on the trolls who see the rather vauge titles that some "philosophical" questions have....like my idea on time...some kid reads through the whole post and says "Haha, kids have to get up early"....what the hell is that?

I think we should get this forum started.

Philosophy:
Noun
Inflected forms: pl.phi·los·o·phies 1. Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline.

Alright then, let me change that slightly- I'm always up for a good debate (because let's face it- any discussion about philosophy eventually turns into a debate)!

I know what philosopy means- it comes from the greek: philo- to love and sophy- wisdom. Hence the goddess of wisdom being called Sophia.

I'm pro-philosophy forum. With the prospect of a good philosophy debate, I know lots of people that I could attract to the site with the promise of actual philosophical issues being under discussion. I used to debate with them all the time, until I moved.

The only problem I see with a new forum for philosophy is that it would heavily overlap TheIssues. Consider it: thinking about philosophy is thinking about thinking, and ways of thinking. TheIssues threads are series of events and problems in which people apply their way of thinking. The way TheIssues threads go, a persons philosophies on law, religion, the world come out either implicitly by positions taken or explicitly by declaring political or religious allegiances in a post or profile. Therefore, TheIssues' posts and threads are applications of philosophy.
My question about a philosophy forum is 'What would be discussed that isn't talked about in TheIssues'? Decarte? Plato?

I kind of see TheIssues as being more of a current event thing whereas the a philosophy forum would be open to discuss virtually anything. Or would that be to virtually discuss anything?

The only reason The Issues is used for philosophy is because there isn't a philosophy forum. Prior to me (I think), there wasn't philosophy on WTF. I think The Issues is, like previously stated, more of a current-event forum. An entirely seperate forum for philosophy would ensure that we would get members truly interested in philosophy, rather than people just browsing current events/trolling. In effect, we could cultivate a whole new WTF culture.

Thats one deffinition but it is also A set of ideas or beliefs relating to a particular field or activity

It's ironic that you said philosophy is not for you when you're offering it.
