Well, yet another way to piss me off. You may have noticed that tax season has come and gone. Some people are still scrambling to complete their taxes after filing an extension because they were too stupid or lazy to go through their receipts ahead of time and file the paperwork by 15 April. I hate paying taxes, but I do it as early as I can, usually in the first week of February. I always get money back. Being a homeowner and the father of three helps. But, I digress.

I made the mistake of discussing taxes recently with my sister, a normally very intelligent 19-year-old who will probably graduate college before I. In our conversation, she hit upon the idea that "poor" people should pay no taxes and that "rich" people (our parents, me, anyone who makes a decent living according to the Democrats) should pay more. Further, these taxes should then be divided amongst the poor in Robin Hood fashion to help put everyone on the same terms economically.

Huh? I blinked and tried to imagine where she had gotten these ideas. I told her that I thought she had been listening to too many liberal professors at college. She didn't agree and a verbal brawl ensued.

I tried to explain that those of us who work for a living and pay taxes on our income worked hard for that money in an attempt to provide for the standard of living she and people like her now enjoy. I further explained that obtaining said gainful employment is beyond no one and that our society will never be one where everyone is equal in economic status. Some people have no ambition, some people are lazy, some people love to work, etc. Some people are so stupid that I wonder how they manage to breathe (Maddonx).

She remained unconvinced. She went on and on about how beautiful our world would be if wealth was divided equally; the clouds would part, sun would shine in, angels would sing, and we'd all have a Coke and smile.

Whatever. I don't normally like to hurt her feelings, but I began to think that I had no other choice. I explained that it was called Communism, that it had been tried, and that it had failed in every attempt. Then, an epiphany.

My sister has always, always been a 4.0 student. She was born 30 and just grew bigger. She works hard for her grades and will undoubtedly go far in professional life. I asked about her friend, Katie. Katie has never been the greatest student, but she always passes her classes; she is the stereotypical C student. Katie is no good at math and had real trouble with college algebra, managing to pull out a C. My sister, of course, had made an A.

So, I suggested that she take her A and make it a B, then she could give the extra grade point to Katie, making her C a B. I have always thought that 3.0 is a great GPA. In this scenario, they both win.

My sister flipped. She started yelling defensively about how hard she worked for her grades, telling me about the late nights studying and the missed parties.

"That's just not fair! I worked really hard for those grades and giving up some so that someone else has a better GPA is just wrong!" she cried.

"Kind of like your new tax system," I said. She froze and her mouth dropped open. She didn't say another word. Score.

Let's see here, first we bailed out the French, by sending in wave after wave of us troops - more than 2.59 million people served in Vietnam from 1962 - 1972. Australia contributed about 40,000 people throughout the conflict. Wait, they were probably all badasses, right? Thanks coming to the rescue. Fact is - if Australia were to have a natural disaster, or large terrorist attack, the first country to offer help (and coincidentally, the first place the Aussie gov't would look) would be the US. Case in point - North Korea.

The UN is doing a lot of media time. Their people travel all over the world looking at things, observing, sometimes even getting their hands dirty, but what else? Where was the UN when Saddam Hussein imprisoned all of those children so that their fathers would remain loyal? Where is the UN in combating known growers, manufacturers, and exporters of drugs? Where was the UN when my unit was sent to Thailand to fight an insurgent warlord? Where was the UN when my unit was again sent to Thailand, this time to kill slavers who were part of a criminal ring with supporters all over the world, specifically in the Middle East?

I'll tell you where. They were in debate. They are aware of all the myriad problems in the world, but they fix precious few.

Well, yet another way to piss me off. You may have noticed that tax season has come and gone. Some people are still scrambling to complete their taxes after filing an extension because they were too stupid or lazy to go through their receipts ahead of time and file the paperwork by 15 April. I hate paying taxes, but I do it as early as I can, usually in the first week of February. I always get money back. Being a homeowner and the father of three helps. But, I digress.

I made the mistake of discussing taxes recently with my sister, a normally very intelligent 19-year-old who will probably graduate college before I. In our conversation, she hit upon the idea that "poor" people should pay no taxes and that "rich" people (our parents, me, anyone who makes a decent living according to the Democrats) should pay more. Further, these taxes should then be divided amongst the poor in Robin Hood fashion to help put everyone on the same terms economically.

Huh? I blinked and tried to imagine where she had gotten these ideas. I told her that I thought she had been listening to too many liberal professors at college. She didn't agree and a verbal brawl ensued.

I tried to explain that those of us who work for a living and pay taxes on our income worked hard for that money in an attempt to provide for the standard of living she and people like her now enjoy. I further explained that obtaining said gainful employment is beyond no one and that our society will never be one where everyone is equal in economic status. Some people have no ambition, some people are lazy, some people love to work, etc. Some people are so stupid that I wonder how they manage to breathe (Maddonx).

She remained unconvinced. She went on and on about how beautiful our world would be if wealth was divided equally; the clouds would part, sun would shine in, angels would sing, and we'd all have a Coke and smile.

Whatever. I don't normally like to hurt her feelings, but I began to think that I had no other choice. I explained that it was called Communism, that it had been tried, and that it had failed in every attempt. Then, an epiphany.

My sister has always, always been a 4.0 student. She was born 30 and just grew bigger. She works hard for her grades and will undoubtedly go far in professional life. I asked about her friend, Katie. Katie has never been the greatest student, but she always passes her classes; she is the stereotypical C student. Katie is no good at math and had real trouble with college algebra, managing to pull out a C. My sister, of course, had made an A.

So, I suggested that she take her A and make it a B, then she could give the extra grade point to Katie, making her C a B. I have always thought that 3.0 is a great GPA. In this scenario, they both win.

My sister flipped. She started yelling defensively about how hard she worked for her grades, telling me about the late nights studying and the missed parties.

"That's just not fair! I worked really hard for those grades and giving up some so that someone else has a better GPA is just wrong!" she cried.

"Kind of like your new tax system," I said. She froze and her mouth dropped open. She didn't say another word. Score.

The reality is that most other nations in the world are not willing to intervene in world affairs to the degree that we are willing to do so. And, if you didn't realize, though I have pointed it out before, we don't really care. We defend our nation out of pride. Most people in the world do so. National pride is a good thing. We like being Americans. Our country is far from perfect, but Utopia does not exist, even in Finland.
No, we are getting so many immigrants because our government allows immigration. That someone chooses to advertise for citizenship over the Internet does not surprise me. I don't like it, but it happens. I'd love to close our borders to immigration for a few years and then watch events unfold around the world.
