Doom 3 runs like shit on my comp..

Official Minimum Requirements:

Minimum:
P4 1.5Ghz CPU (or equivalent).
384MB of RAM.
64MB graphics card (see below for chip details).
2GB of free hard drive space.

Lowest supported GPU is a Geforce 4 MX (worse than Geforce 3).
Supported cards:
GF 4 MX.
GF 3.
GF 4.
GF FX (and higher).
Radeon 8500s, 9000s and higher.

PC Gamer were the first to review they themselves recommend:
2Ghz CPU.
512MB RAM.
Radeon 9800.
5-channel sound card and speakers.

My specs:
http://www.computerbargains.co.uk/shop/customer/product.php?productid=16559&cat=255

Does anyone know of any little programs or update packages that would make it run smoother? I'd like to try and have it run better without spending any money, like there are those little RAM updaters, stuff like that.. Anyone know of a few handy gaming utilities? And if not any free ones, what should I update in my comp as far as graphics card etc..

Have you turned off all of the details.
That can affect the game play.
But the graphics will suck.

Just go buy a Radeon 9800 Pro... They are cheap now, and more than enough power for almost every game out there.

Questions:

2. Will it fit into my comp?
3. Does it require extra cooling?
4. Is it easy to put in my comp?
5. Where can I find a Radeon 9800 Pro?

Questions:
1. How much? $200
2. Will it fit into my comp? YES
3. Does it require extra cooling? Use a can opener, and a hair dryer set on cool
4. Is it easy to put in my comp? open the side. look for the AGP slot (Shorter then the rest, probably brown)
5. Where can I find a Radeon 9800 Pro? http://www.pricegrabber.com www.newegg.com
Whew.. Thanks..

Hope that helps

Have you tried updating your drivers? That can really help.

I would suggest installing the latest Nvidia drivers from www.nvidia.com

Unistall your old ones first from Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, or else you will be in serious shit.

Also, do this:

You know the little Doom 3 shortcut on your desktop?

Right click it, and go to properties.

Click the Shortcut tab, add this line of text in. Be sure to put a space before you paste it in:

+set com_allowconsole 1

Open the game up, and press the ~ key.

There! You now have the console!

Now, type this into the console:

seta com_useFaceCulling 1

After you do that, turn off specular mapping, bump mapping, and high quality special effects in the options menu.

Voila! You can now run Doom 3 at a stable framerate. It works grear on my overclocked Radeon 9200.

Good command for Doom 3!!!
seta com_useFaceCulling is good so the graphics dont get all choppy.
You only see what you want to see in the game.
But P99 I think you should still get a new video card.
Get The ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

Actually, I would recommend a 9700 pro. It performs at almost the same level for about $80 less.

Go to www.pricewatch.com to find one.

There is no point in spending $80 for only about 5 extra frames per second.

yep thats the one, like jimmy said 9700 pro is better then 9800 pro because you save 80 $.Its not worth the money for 9800 pro just for 5 extra fps.
If I were rich I would get ATI Radeon x800 LOL, I wouldnt give a shit on how much of waste it is. Its the most powefullest video card ever.

Descent

DON'T GET THAT CARD!

IT DOES NOT COME WITH ANY ACCESSORIES! IT'S JUST THE CARD ITSELF!

Unless you want to order all the accessories from ATI, don't buy that card!

So.. The 9800 comes with stuff.. Like what?

Descent

The 9700 you were looking at is open box. They most likely only have one in stock.

It comes with the card only. No cables, adapters, remotes, etc.

I would suggest a 9700 pro from here:

http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/simprod.asp?pid=5454&ad=pwatch

That is a good, cheap card that performs with the big boys.

LOL my friend bought a Radeon 9800 XT, he can input every console onto his computer (it had a gagillion heatsinks and 3 fans) and it has support for 2 monitors = 2x the desktop!!!!! I also played the HL2 beta on his PC, and it ran
perfect . He ran 3dMark and every video clip ran perfectly as well, compared to my G3, it blew mine right out of the water

Something like this:

Descent

I tried the HL2 beta...it would crash after it tried to load a map (cries).

A 9800XT only gets about 15fps more for most games than a 9700 pro. I don't get why people don't read the benchmarks before they buy a product. It drives me nuts. These are the kinds of people who spend shitloads of cash on a 9800XT and an Athlon 64 when they could get better performance out of a dual Athlon MP/Duron rig with a 9700 pro.

I tried the leaked version its very cool.
The game physics really amazed me.
I can see how much coding it took them for all the special features.
Like for instance that gravit gun, you can move anything in the game.
Also I played a unfinished map, when you watch the bink video of bug bait it shows the hole. I walked threw the map and I saw the big bug monster in a locked cabin. LOL it was a gap in the map, so I couldnt do anything.

Just a quick note, do not spend the extra money on getting the 9800XT. The 9800 Pro is within the performance of the 9800XT, and will save you $100 or so.
You can pickup a brand new 9800Pro for $198 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=1 4-142-009&depa=0
Or you can pickup a refurbished 9800pro for $150 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=1 4-102-304R&depa=0
Or you can pickup a refurbished 9700pro for $132 shipped: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=1 4-102-246R&type=Refurbish

Spending an extra $20 to get a 9800pro over a 9700pro is well worth it.

I've purchased refurbished video cards from NewEgg before and have never had any issues. This is how I picked up a 9700 Pro two months after release for only $200. The same thing for the 9800. They only ship the card, but you don't need any cables unless you're attempting to use two monitors at the same time where one does not have a DVI connector. You could buy a DVI-to-VGA adaptor for $15 if needed.

I've also picked up other refurbished products like some small-form-factor cases and they shipped with every single item.
