I clicked on my friends away message that said:

OMFG LOOK

?!!!??!?

Now I advise you, DO NOT go to that website.. I have a virus now that won't let me open programs/certain windows.. I know how to fix it, but it closes the window I need.. Anyone know how to get around this..?

I have had something similar a few times. Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and look in your process list. If you see something called "ntsysmgr.exe" or "sp.exe" do a windows search for it and delete it.

Edit: I am assuming you have WIN2K or XP

See.. I can't do control alt delete.. It closes the window as soon as it comes up..

Wait... .SCR?!

Go to display properties and select another screen saver...that should fix it.

SCR file = Screen saver.

If all else fails, press F8 when Windows is booting up and go into safe mode.

Then select another screen saver, and voila! It's fixed.

taskkill/PID (PID#) -- kills a process

Where is this command prompt??

I had the exact same problem.

Just ctrl + alt + delete and then screen shot it. After that, ID the file name of the virus and do a system search on it. Delete all of the files by that name (It was like MXsomething, if I remember correctly). One of them will say "Cannot delete - currently running." The solution to that one is simple... ctrl + alt + delete and then end the task as fast as you can (took me about 15-20 tries). Then, delete the file (it's no longer running) and empty it from your recycle bin.

There you have it... the layman's, brutish-force way to fix a virus!

Start -> Programs -> accessories -> command prompt

start> run> type in cmd, or even faster windows key+R then type in cmd.

if you are searching the process list, it may also help to reboot into safe mode.

i don't remember what other versions it works on. i know for a fact it works in xp pro, but it might have been left out of home. i'm pretty sure it works on 2k as well.

Well, I got another one.. Jesus I was just looking up tabs and it said "VIRUS FOUND!" And everything went to shit..

I'm on the laptop this time because it won't let me open explorer.. When I try to open explorer and some other programs it shows me that window saying its not working and it asks whether to send an error report or not to send an error report.. I tried to do a restore but it does the same thing.. I did a disk cleanup to get any bad temp files out, Adaware got rid of everything that was harmful.. I did many full system scans and it can't find anything else.. Symantec AntiVirus found viruses and quarantined and then I deleted.. But it can't find any other viruses and I'm still having these problems.. I went to control panel and got rid of anything that looked suspicious that I didn't install etc.

I feel like Kerry right now.. Quoting myself, "I actually voted against having a computer help forum on wtf.com before I voted for it!"

Yeah so please help!

Thanks.. Whoever helps me and it solves the problem gets rep for the next week..

PLus, You should do an on-line virus scan in safe mode w/ networking http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym

I don't give a shit about the rep, but I'll help ya if I can.

Have you disabled everything under your startup tab (MSCONFIG), that isn't needed to connect, then booted into safe mode w/ networking. Then try IE?

junglizm
10-27-2004, 07:02 PM
LAN/T1 thingy..
I doubt you're on a T1, do you mean "router" by LAN thingy?

Try msconfig (from run (WINKEY + R)) and see what's in your startup, don't just use the startup folder in the start menu.

Reboot the system: When you see the bios splash, start tapping the F8 key, or when the little white bars are racing across the bottom of the screen. Tap F8 until you get the Advance start up menu:

Choose "Safe mode w/ Networking" sit back and let it boot.. It takes longer, so just relax. When you get the Desktop trying connecting.

If you are on cable or a T1, there's a good chance you maybe able to connect. Then Do a web scan. Try the safe mode, and we can go from there. Hurry though man.. OR download a IRC Client.

Try Start< Run< Msconfig< startup tab< then uncheck anything you don't need to connect. It shows you the program path.

Apply and restart the computer.

If that doesn't work, you can buy some over the counter topical cream. Apply generously, before it spreads to your hard drive.
If it does, you know what that means. Bye-bye, sex life.

What?!

Wait... .SCR?! SCR file = Screen saver.

You can rename any .exe to .scr and it will run as normal, and .pif does the same.
