So I was browsing today when I found a part of the Bible which stated the creation of languages.

People of the town bable started building a tower in which the worshipped more than god. They put all their effort into buolding this tower and prayed to it. God became infuriated and made all people speak different languages, they coudnt understand eachother, they were babbling to eachother. Since they coudn't understand eachother, they coudn't continue building. Then God sent them to all parts of the world.

I find this complete bull shit. That's just my opinion.

Hey!!! Me too!!! I mean...the tower was supposed to reach into Heaven or something. But we went beyond Heaven, into space. Wouldn't the workers have asphyxiated? Im just so confused on religion.

You both have no idea how the actual story goes.

They didn't actually build the tower to heaven. But they were going to try.

Why? Because they were all unified, could speak the same language, blah blah whatever whatever.

So, they tried to build a tower up to heaven to challenge god, who got mad and pwned them all.

Why did 'God' get mad at them for loving him and wanting to be with him...? I'm still confused...

That's why some people think that god is hypocritical, like me. If god was "all forgiving," why the hell is he striking to many plagues down on us?

actually I believe the story goes that the people of bable built the tower to attempt to kill god... after building it and firing crossbows at the sky to kill god he punished mankind by making each region speak a different language... or something....

Actually, that particular year, God was embarrased because he and his wife were having problems, and the house was a wreck. He didn't want his subjects to think that thier omnipotent leader was having issues. So, he smote them all. Quite simple, really.

Here's the real deal:
Nimrod, a descendant of Ham and a Nephilim, designed the tower to reach not to "heaven" but to the nearby power gate situated above the surface at an unknown height. To humans these gates are invisible, but to Nimrod it was a glaring eyesore, since The Flood had recently destroyed the Nephilim population. He planned to amass humanity as one to build the tower, reach the gate and open it, and unleash the sealed Nephilim.

All religions contradict themselves and eachother, and everyone who practices any religion contradicts that religion.. humans. yeah, and btw, i think the universe isn't run by anybody (even though somewhere out there there's a lot of other species, just too far), but earth is run by humans, so that's why everything allways get fucked up..

Will someone find the passage in the damn bible?

Actually, it's Babel.

Also, it's a fucking story. The Bible is a book of stories. Stories with morals about living a better life and worshipping God more devoutly. Or something.

Still, there's no God(s), so this is irrelevant.

The gods created man to be their slaves, armies and entertainment. They made our ancestors speak different languages the way farmers have their own brands on cows. It was a form of tagging.

Yet another portion of the Bible that makes it glaringly obvious that the entire thing is a fabrication forged by the ignorance of barbarians. These people did not have the numbers, the materials, or the fundamental understanding of architecture to build such a tower. And if they did, they all would have been stuck at the portion of the atmosphere where you start to burn.

The idea that God Himself is the direct source of striking us with plague is a misunderstanding. The accusation was made popular by Christian Fundies who claim that every bad thing that happens to Non-Christians is a direct punishment from God, and that every good thing that happens to themselves is a reward from God. Conversely, to them, any good thing that happens to non-Christians and any bad thing that happens to THEM is dismissed with the whole "it rains on the good and the bad" bullshit.

Pick a fucking side. Either God is taking an active role in rewards/punishments here on Earth, or these things are natural to existence in this Universe and such punishments/rewards are to come LATER, AFTER this world ends.

Christian Fundies want it both ways, and it's only making them look dumber for it.

Woah, calm down. The Bible is very symbolic, so it can't all be taken literally. But since I didn't live thousands of years ago, I don't know what the symbolism really stands for.

What the hell are yo babbling about? They built a tower to reach God, so they can be like him, and have his high stature. But God made something happen, they started to speak different languages, and God sent then around the world. Get it yo?

Wrong. They most definitely were NOT trying to "reach God".
I posted a link in this thread from the most informed authority on the subject - if you're going to insert your opinion into the discussion, try to be informed even just a little.

Sence no one seems entitled to look up the actuall verse, but rather depend on the opinions of others I decided to look it up in my bible (New Living Translation) I even included footnotes:

1)At one time the whole world spoke a single language and used the same words. 2)As the people migrated eastward, they found a plain in the land of Babylonia* and settled there. 3)They began to talk about construction projects. "Come," they said, "let's make great piles of burnt brick and collect natural asphalt to use as mortar. 4)Let's build a great city with a tower that reaches to the skies--a monument to our greatness! This will bring us together and keep us from scattering all over the world." 5)But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6)"Look!" he said. "If they can accomplish this when they have just begun to take advantage of their common language and political unity, just think of what they will do later. Nothing will be impossible for them! 7)Come, let's go down and give them different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other." 8)In that way, the LORD scattered them all over the earth; and that ended the building of the city. 9)That is why the city was called Babel,* because it was there that the LORD confused the people by giving them many languages, thus scattering them across the earth.

Footnotes:

11:2 Hebrew Shinar.

11:9 Babel sounds like a Hebrew term that means "confusion."

If you want my opinion just ask, Iv'e read all the new testament and the books Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, I am currently on Deuteronomy.

What the hell are yo babbling about? They built a tower to reach God, so they can be like him, and have his high stature.

Siryus has his shit together for sure.

By the way folks, before anyone gives him shit about the "New Living Translation", I suggest you find out exactly what it means.

Here's a hint: It's not the KJV bible with different sentences. Many of the new translations are actually NEW TRANSLATIONS, made from the oldest and most authorative manuscripts.
Also, the manuscripts throughout the ages and in their different languages tend to be translated extremely well and very carefully. Actual studies have shown that the "it's been translated so many times we don't know what it means anymore" argument is absolutely false.

Way to go Siryus. I'd rep you, but I gotta wait.

Also getting back on topic, I disagree. The Bible is very poetic and symbolic and should not be taken literally. Most of the things stand for something else. However, that's not to say I don't believe in God (which I do).

the bible is a written record of how people saw the world 2005+ years ago. that was how they saw it then, doesnt mean thats the way it is now.

and back to the tower of babel... maybe they did make it to god, and defeated him, but they died and their tower fell apart over time? after all, you see no more instances in the world that show to the masses that god exists. only in one-on-one, so no proof to the world he does exist (aka they are just nut-cases). how's that idea sit?
