I am scheduled to ship out for Marine Corps. boot camp January 17. I met with the recruiter and we talked over stuff (but my mind was made up beforehand so don't bitch at me bout thinking it through I've been thinking bout it for 3 years.)

I am going to MEPS this friday in indianapolis, after that I am training for a month til I ship out. I appreciate all the advice everyone has given me and I feel this is going to be a good decision.

Everything you do will be wrong.

They are going to scream at you as soon as you get there.

Stay nervous, that way you are alert and keep your mouth shut.

Keep your head up.

Don't take it personally, it's a song and a dance... let them call the tune and just play along.

Don't lose your temper.

Watch your ass as well as your buddy's.

Be careful with your money.

Know all your rights and regulations.

Don't be a pussy.

Pay attention in your class.

And last but not least- The smartest thing you can do is be dumb. No matter what you think you know, blank it out and be a dumbass to absorb it all like new.

Listen to everything they tell you to do, even if they tell you to get off of their field and leave their property. If they say something like "Get the fuck off of my base you sack of shit" then you listen to them, because it shows you can take orders, if you don't, you'll get in trouble.

Dont use your knees to climb up shit! Thats how you break them!

Take good care of your fucking back.

Learn the parts of the guns- have a specialty, too.

Get very close with one / two of your fellow grunts. YOu can serve each other well, and its good to have a go-to man.

Always.. ALWAYS! Look your superiois straight in the eye, in a respective way.

Stealth is usually the best way to take one guy down.

Dont fucking run in there hold up your bayonet, and your AK47 yelling "You yellow bellied bastards!". That ones just obvious, but you get the point.

Keep your feet dry, if you happen to be shipped over sea.

Try to enjoy yourself, and keep in mind, it could always be worse.

Well, In Canada we still get to choose whether we want to be in several diffrent Cores.

The Peace Core is where you obviously keep peace between 2+ oppositions, not including ourselves.

The Infantry Core is the opposition that goes on foot, aswell and tanks and shit like that.

And thentheres the Airforce. Self explanitory.

Each core learns diffrent skills, aswell as how to use diffrent vehicles and weaponry.

Since I dont know how the American military goes, I suppose I used the Canadian structure.

And im pretty sure that when your in the field, trying to infiltrate an Afghani military base thats just over the hill, you'll need to know how to move in unseen, and you'll probably have a couple diffrent forces going in from diffrent positions.

He's goofy.
Thanks, I try.

Well, grats to 'slinger on the bonus.

I offer you this suggestion as far as the money goes...

When you get paid, decide how much you need to "play with", as far as leisure and stuff. Try to only eat out once a week and eat as often as you can at the mess hall. Put the rest of your money away. I can tell you right now, as a person who has been doing the GI Joe thing for years, that everyone in a military town is trying to take your money. You can easily piss away a hundred dollars in an hour on little shit.

Other advice: Do NOT meet any women in a Marine Corps town. They are either female Marines themselves (trouble), a Marine's wife (big trouble), a senior Marine's daughter who may not be 18 (HUGE trouble), or some woman who is looking for a Marine to marry because she wants the bonus (the WORST possible trouble).

Just do what you are told, unless you know it's wrong. Sometimes leaders make bad calls. And you WILL burn if you are supposed to know better.

If you get into a serious bind, you can call your congressman if no one else helps you. It's easier than you think, seriously.

And from a former Marine: You'd better shed a tear when you get the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

Well, your certainly not going to get a Desert Eagle, now are you?
And yes, you do get issued an AK47 once you have the experience, the rank, or a recommendation from a higher ranking officer.

Biggest thing I can offer is when your in, you should be taken to a class to decide if you want a bank( ours was armed service or Navy Fed, I chose the later.) You could keep your current bank, but if given the option for Navy Fed, don't.

I just told my mom what MOS i was going in with the marines .... infantry.

She's got more crying ahead of her, she had to let me go from the phone. Stupid aunt asking what job I picked.

Edit Update:
My dad left a message on my phone basically asking what are the odds of me going to iraq and also if he could talk to my recruiter.... fuckin great. The last thing I need in terms of support is my parents disagreeing with my decision.

Slinger, you've already made up your mind, and there's nothing your parents can do about it. Yeah, it might make you feel a little shitty (how do you think I felt when I told my mom?) and it might make them upset, and sometimes they won't agree with it, but it's your life.

However, I guarantee you that when you come home for leave after boot camp and they see you in your uniform, they'll be extremely proud of you. My mom was. She still is, even if I'm having to be sent home for medical reasons.

You do what you think is best. That's the most important thing, because how can you make others happy if you aren't happy yourself?

When I told my mom I joined, they had just rented "Saving Private Ryan".

Dude, your mom is gonna worry. It's natural. But guess what? You're doing this for your mom, my mom, and all these other people.

It's your decision and you're a grownass man. You will always love your mother and father, and you should always listen to them... but this is your life. This is you calling the shots, and to be honest- I am nearly 100% certain you will be in Iraq or Afghanistan. This is not Mom and Dad's call. It's yours.

I've had to deal with the same thing for a long time. People in my family are always asking when I am going to get out and go to college. Then they go into spills where they sit and criticize the government and say ignorant things just to hear themselves talk.

I always just tell them this "There is no greater honor than serving the country. When I am over there, I am not worried about oil, politics, or money. My main concern is taking care of my brother next to me, because he is taking care of me. I wish I had the convenience of worrying about politics, oil, and money from the comfort of my own home. But until I have earned that privilage, I am content to do my duty... because if I don't do it willingly, someone else will be made to do it. And beleive me, if it's a war for oil and money, they're going to fight their war. They're going to have troops... even if they have to draft them".

That usually shuts them up, or at least gets them to change the subject.

I've also been given the whole "war is immoral" thing. I've even had them use the Bible as an excuse for it. My response? "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (St. John 15:13).

My thoughts-

I am going to die some day. I'd rather die doing this than I would on the streets at the hand of some peice of garbage that wants what is in my wallet.

You'll learn to be arrogant soon enough... and you have the right to be.

I don't know Slinger, I don't see things your dads way. I mean yeah, every war we've gotten into since we ended WWII back in '45 has had some kind of plan or scheme behind it... but still it's a much greater opportunity than doing what you're doing now.

The chance at joining the greatest fraternity/brotherhood known to man today?

The chance to better your life in ways that most run of the mill people just don't see?

The chance to get a whole new career, and get paid while doing it?

To hell with politics, it's not your job to implement. You just follow the orders given.

Hell, I've said it before and I'll say it again dammit! If I hadn't led my life in the direction I did all those years ago... I'd be right there along with you in the Corp kicking ass and taking names.

Dude, I have to say this:

There's a lot of things to worry about as a civilian. Health care, dental care, food, a place to live, your family's bills, working enough hours to pay for everything... and if you die, they're fucked.

Or you can worry about Iraq. At least you have none of the other concerns, and if you die everything is taken care of.

It's still true, you are more likely to be killed on the interstate than you are in combat.

Ha... Reclassed 88M czeching in... I hope all goes well with your discussion... I had plenty of family members that were against me going to Iraq.. mainly because of their political leanings.. I just made sure to let them know that I went to and was engaged in Bosnia because of Clinton... and they said nothing... and now they say something.. obviously partisan reasons.. when they bring up the oil thing I ask them how much they paid for gas.. I made sure that they all agreed to never protest and use my name... never use my name as a point to your anti-war/ anti-bush arguments... It was my decision to join the Army... it was my decision to reenlist... it was my decision to support my brothers and sisters in arms regardless of politics.. ... I agree with the previous statement of "you're a grown-ass man"...

So get this (I'm going to be venting so there WILL be bitchin)... because we are trying to cut back on heat bill, me and my roomie never use the heat. It's about a constant 45-50 degrees every night. Last night I got up about 6 times just because I was freezing (mind you, I was wearing 2 hoodies, a hat, and sweatpants under covers). I had to get up at 6:30am to go to my workout for marines. I ran a constant 12 minute run, 10 minute stairclimber, and a wide array of arm and back exercises. From my house, to the gym, back to the house, and to work I have to walk probably 2 miles total. I got no car to drive myself anywhere. So now I am at work til 12, where afterwards I will make a bank deposit that won't go through tomorrow, I have no food in my house, and I have to be BACK at the gym at 3. This is just for today in terms of going back to the gym because all the recruits are meeting. But other than that I will experience this every day.

Shit.

Edit:: And to make matters worse my parents are not behind me on the decision. They would rather see me miserable, behind a desk, making alright money, and out of harms way.
