I have a 2002 TJ. A Jeep Wrangler highly modified to make it more functional offroad. Lifted, beafed up, and with things installed that most people don't even have in there garage.

Needless to say, this has gifted me with my marvelous 13 MPG.

A trade off that I accept knowing that I can't get stuck and can fix almost anything where it breaks at.

One modification I have been looking at as of late is converting to diesel. This is an expensive and difficult modification that would most likely break up my weekly $50 refuels.

Here is a link worth checking. (http://blogs.4wdandsportutility.com/6232286/editorials/diesel-jeep-swap-kit/index.html)

Wile this is jeep specific, diesel is a form of power that most people should at least know about. It is 33% more efficient than gas, lasts longer, and has much better power ratings compared to gas.

What are your opinions on diesel?

For the record, this swap would net me about 35-50 MPG:D

Plus if you can get it running on bio-diesel and you go out and make it yourself, you pretty much have free gas.

If you arent planning on bio-diesel, you may want to look at diesel prices. Last I saw they were damn near $4 a gallon, and only slated to go up. So say you are getting 20mpg more with diesel(IMHO your figure is going to be a little less than 35), but you are paying damn near a dollar a gallon more than gasoline. If you add the cost of the conversion, and the savings you will be making(I figure not much, a fill up of diesel will be more than gasoline but will last a little longer), how long will it take to have the conversion pay for itself?

Will it run on vegetable oil? I know some types of diesel engines are able to run on oil once you warm the engine up with diesel for a few miles. There are a few people around here that do that, and they just pick up the oil from the local fast food stores and filter it themselves. Free fuel.

All diesel engines will run on biodiesel, and most will run on vegie. Its just the nature of the beast.

One thing you prolly have not considered is how bad I am doing on fuel. On a weekend I can go through 4 tanks of fuel. Now, last time I filled up, it cost me $50. Gas motors hit there power band ~2500 RPM. Holding that for a wile builds alot of heat on top of how fast your running through fuel. A diesel starts producing power at 800 RPM. I could make more fuel last longer, and run longer with out shutting down every 30 minuets to cool off.
