George W. Bush, upon taking office in 2001, immediately began a systematic withdrawal from major international treaties to which the US was a signatory. As part of that policy, on May 7th, 2002 Donald Rumsfeld informed the Secretary General of the UN that the US was officially withdrawing from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Months before, the US had already established that the court would grant the United States immunity from the court for US citizens suspected of atrocities. Under guidelines pushed through despite EU concerns, US soldiers serving overseas would be immune from prosecution in the court, while politicians and US officials, including CIA operatives, could claim diplomatic immunity.

That was not enough. Rumsfeld made it very clear that the United States would reject any attempt by the court or state parties to the treaty to assert any jurisdiction over American citizens. In short, Americans were accountable to no one for any atrocities they might commit anywhere in the world....

The right to Freedom of Expression is not limited to those who agree or disagree with our government/military but I do believe if you are going to report on the Operation: Iraq Freedom. as a news source, then you need to put your judgment and values aside and report all of it, not just the side you want to report so people stand with you. I read the full article and wanted to mention that I was in Guantanamo during a police action and I saw no atrocities being committed. Prisoners were kept in stockades open to view, they were given food and medical treatment, they were even given cigarettes by well-meaning soldiers.

The prisoners entered the base, US territory, illegally and were detained. Many of the detainees turned out to be criminals trying to escape Cuban authorities and were turned over to the Cuban government for handling. When they discovered that we would not immediately grant them political immunity, many of them rioted and had to be forcibly restrained.

At no time were there atrocities of any kind committed by either side, although the Cuban authorities were rougher on the prisoners than US forces, often using nightsticks to get a point across to a recalcitrant dissident.

If I recall, two guys from her company were shot in the head at point blank range, and no one went in there to inspect the facilities to insure that the Iraqi Army was following the code of conduct in regard to POW's.
